Job Title: Computer Operator II
Shift Hours: 3:00 pm to Midnight

Position Summary:
Under general supervision, this position works directly with other IT department personnel for technical guidance and training needs. Working alone, the Computer Operator–2nd Shift II position is responsible for System I daily maintenance tasks, system backups and monitoring of the nightly batch processing.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Monitors all Data Center systems and processes, including all System I partitions. Monitors PDA nightly batch processing programs for error-free completion. Uses good judgment and takes appropriate action when the unusual occurs. Because the Operator works unsupervised for the majority of his shift, the application of good judgment is among the most important aspects of the job. Operator must be vigilant in both monitoring for, and recognizing, situations that require action and make the proper judgment as to the specific actions to be undertaken. The monitoring of, and appropriate reaction to problems with, the PDA nightly processing form the most fundamental part of the Operator's job.
  • Diagnoses the nature and severity of errors and takes the appropriate course of action.
  • Using System I job logs, diagnoses problems and effectively communicates description to a programmer/developer on the phone.
  • Performs/monitors backups.
  • Maintains event logs for Data Center processes.
  • Performs daily "housekeeping" functions on the System I (move spool files, check job queues, etc.)
  • Prints/distributes system reports
  • Maintains printer paper levels
  • Maintains inventory of Data Center supplies
  • Participates in the "change management" process by performing code promotions
  • Occasionally participates in departmental/employee moves and company build outs
  • Upholds performance standards

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2-3 years experience as a System I operator.
  • Familiarity with IBM's BRMS (Backup and Recovery Media Services) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with System I management via the HMC (Hardware Management Console) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Windows, PC hardware, networks, printers, peripherals and common office applications
  • Familiarity with LAN topology and hardware/software including Ethernet, switches, hubs, servers, gateways and routers
  • Proficiency in oral and written English language communication
  • Regular attendance and excellent punctuality
  • Detail oriented
  • Able to perform multiple tasks and projects under time constraints
  • High school diploma or GED [as well as classes in various analysis techniques]
  • Physical and mental requirements for General Office Personnel
